Resources for Parents

Letter from Sir Andrew McFarlane

If you make an application to the court regarding family time arrangements (or receive an application which someone else has made) you will receive a letter from Sir Andrew McFarlane, the most senior judge in the Family Court in England and Wales. This letter includes important information about the roles and responsibilities of both parents, putting the needs of the child first.

A range of top tips put together by the Family Justice Young People’s Board (FJYPB) aimed at helping parents, carers, family members and professionals support children and young people.

Family Mediation Services

Professionally trained mediators can help separated parents sort out arrangements for children and finances. Mediation can be less stressful, quicker and much less expensive than going to court. In some cases, Legal Aid is available. 

Parenting Plan Template

A practical FREE resource offering guidance on a range of topics to help separated parents navigate co-parenting more effectively after a relationship breakdown.

The Judicial Protocol

Revised protocol (November 2023) providing guidance on referrals of children and families to child contact services in family proceedings. Endorsed by Sir Andrew McFarlane, it sets out the types of contact, the referral process and information about court orders.  

Cafcass Domestic Abuse Policy (2025)

This sets out practice requirements that support practitioners and managers to improve the effectiveness of their practice and advice to the court for children and adults who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse.

Guidance on Writing to Children: A Judges Toolkit

Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of the Family Division, has published guidance for family judges on when, how and why to write to children in family court proceedings.

The guidance was developed with the Family Justice Young People’s Board, with individuals sharing their own experiences of proceedings and their thoughts on communication from judges.
